I’m not going to miss it. I highly recommend to all of you that you don’t ever move into someone’s basement except as a last resort. Especially not when they have grandchildren who visit every weekend and occasionally during the week. Grandchildren who apparently don’t listen when they’re told that people live underneath them and they need to be quiet at night.

That said, I’m moving into an apartment with neighbors both above and below me, so... Hopefully they’re better.

And here’s a carmobile for your time:

Yea, I think if you live next to/below/above someone you probably are going to have some annoyances no matter what. But, unruly grandkids sounds worse than average. I couldn’t stand living in apartments and am so happy to have my own house now.

“Grandchildren who apparently don’t listen when they’re told that people live underneath them”

As a parent of small children, that would be horrible to live under. My kids are really good kids, but I think living under them would still be a special kind of torture. At least mine go to bed super early.

Sharing walls/ceilings/floors with loud neighbors can really have an effect on your mental health. I was lucky enough to rent an end unit apartment on the second floor of a 2 story building, but I shared a wall with a crying baby and the people below me threw loud parties. They both moved out around the same time and I had a blissful 6 months where both apartments were vacant. It was glorious.

Here’s to hoping that your new neighbors are quiet and childfree.

I hate apartment living. I’ve had either loud neighbours or loud roommates. Can’t wait to own a detached home.

My last apartment only had neighbors to the back and above. The neighbors to the back were an elderly couple who I never heard a peep out of. The neighbors above, on the other hand, enjoyed doing their laundry at midnight as well as what sounded like pretty athletic sex that the woman of the house REALLY enjoyed. The last one was only annoying when I wasn’t getting any sex of my own.

My kid loves his regular bedtime, which is awesome. He goes to bed at 8 and we have lots of time to watch PG-13 movies, and eat all the candy he doesn’t know we have.

Both my girls are great sleepers. We start bedtime at 7:00, so they’re totally done and asleep by 8:00. Sometimes, when my wife and I are tired, we do it even earlier. They sleep until sometime between 6-7 am without fail. I don’t understand how people who let their kids stay up until 11 don’t go completely insane.

Our upstairs neighbors got their kid tap dancing lessons. It took a couple of weeks of arguing for them to understand that tap dancing is never an acceptable activity when you live in apartment.

I consider myself lucky that my mother picked a rather quiet unit when I was a child.

It was only a 4-unit building that was essentially two houses connected at the hip, but it was nice never having to hear anything short of one of the neighbors coming home at night with their turbodiesel 2500 truck. I don’t remember which of the Big Three it belonged to.

Neither do I. It’s not good for the kid either.
